What Is Swifter Than SWIFT?
By the time you read this month's issue of TPAtlanta, we will have just passed the 5th anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Regardless of where you stand along the political and ideological continuum, you had to be impacted by the events of that day. I am old enough to remember where I was when President Kennedy got shot and when Martin Luther King was assassinated, but the events of 9-11 still resonate with me strongly. Perhaps you have your own memories of how your day unfolded five years ago.
I remember reluctantly delivering a consulting report to a bank CIO that day despite all the chaos going on in the world around us. A small technology start-up that I was involved with back then was supposed to get some venture capital funding in September, 2001, but that money disappeared soon after the planes hit the Word Trade Center and the Pentagon.
It is in the spirit of 9-11 and how our country's fight against terrorism has permeated our daily lives that we use this issue of TPAtlanta to discuss an interesting facet of Transaction Processing that may be new to you: Hawala.
Earlier this summer, President Bush was quick to react angrily against the New York Times for exposing the US government's monitoring of SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications) as a suspected conduit for the transfer of terrorist funds.

U.S. Banks Are Slow to Embrace Mobile Commerce
Imagine waving your New York subway pass in front of the cash register at a 7-Eleven convenience store to buy a sandwich. Or paying for items you found while surfing the Web on your cell phone by sending a text message.
Such futuristic exercises in the U.S. are already a reality in many Asian and European countries.
For example, Hong Kong residents can use the local subway pass, called an Octopus card, to pay for purchases at fast-food restaurants, convenience stores and vending machines.Click here for more..
